Field Study Tour of Katrina Recovery Areas In late August 2005, states along Gulf Coast were ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The aftermath resulted extraordinary health, housing, environmental and economic challenges from which New Orleans is still recovering. This unique and customized tour provides conference attendees with an opportunity to see the effects of Hurricane Katrina, hear from its survivors, and explore the community recovery process. For those who took the Katrina Recovery tour in 2010, this year’s tour offers an opportunity to see what progress has been made over the past two years. Attendees will be picked up at the Astor Crowne Plaza at 8:00 a.m. You will drive in a deluxe mini-coach on this fully narrated tour through the Ninth Ward and St. Bernard’s Parish. During the driving tour, attendees will see areas of great devastation along with areas of significant rebuilding. Environmental Field Study Tour of Wetland Areas Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the 2010 BP oil spill destroyed over 200 square miles of Louisiana’s unique and intricate ecosystem, home to more than 70 rare, threatened, or endangered species. Beyond its world ecological significance, the wetlands are the heart of America’s Energy Coast, a place that fuels the nation and provides for its domestic energy and economic security. Although efforts continue to rebuild the cities, addressing the environmental effects on the wetlands remain vital to the region’s recovery as they provide the last natural barrier for cities and towns when natural disasters occur. Attendees will be picked up at the Astor Crowne Plaza at 8:00 a.m. You will drive in a deluxe, climate-controlled motor coach with licensed tour guides to provide a customized, narrated tour to and from the bayou region of southern Louisiana that has been specially prepared to consider the interests and professional experiences of conference attendees. Upon arriving in Cajun country, attendees will depart on swamp boats for a guided tour of the marsh area complete with exotic tropical plants and wildlife including herons, nutria, turtle and alligators.
